Known for its smooth finish, easy application, and eco-friendly formula, MudPaint can transform your old furniture into beautiful, timeless pieces. In this guide, I'll walk you through the basics of using MudPaint and share some essential tips and techniques to ensure your project turns out perfectly. Painting is easier than you think it is. Don't be intimidated by paint. It's the easiest way I know to completely change the look of your dated piece into a show stopper in no time.

What is MudPaint?

MudPaint is a unique, clay-based paint that offers excellent coverage and a smooth, matte finish. Unlike traditional latex or oil-based paints, MudPaint is eco-friendly, low in VOCs (volatile organic compounds), and easy to work with. It's ideal for furniture makeovers, giving pieces a vintage or shabby-chic look without the need for extensive prep work.

Getting Started: What You’ll Need

Before you start your painting project, gather the following supplies:

  • MudPaint Vintage Clay Based Furniture Paint in your chosen color (check out the full color catalog here)
  • Paintbrushes (synthetic bristle brushes are my favorite)
  • Sandpaper (120-grit or 220-grit, 400-grit or brown paper bag)
  • Clean, lint-free cloths (old t-shirts are ideal for this)
  • Mild soap and water
  • Painter’s tape (if needed)
  • Drop cloths to protect your workspace
  • MudPaint Protective Clear Coat or MudPaint Clear Wax for a protective finish

Step-by-Step Guide to Using MudPaint

1. Prepare Your Surface

Preparation is key to achieving a smooth, long-lasting finish. Start by cleaning your furniture thoroughly with mild soap and water to remove any dirt, grease, or dust. Once clean, let it dry completely. Lightly sand the surface with 120-grit or 220-grit sandpaper to create a bit of texture for the paint to adhere to. Wipe away any sanding dust with a clean, damp cloth.

2. Stir the Paint

Open your MudPaint can and give the paint a good stir. The clay-based formula can settle over time, so make sure it’s well-mixed before you start painting. Avoid shaking the can, as this can introduce air bubbles into the paint.

3. Apply the First Coat

Dip your paintbrush into the MudPaint, tapping off any excess. Apply a thin, even coat of paint to your furniture, following the grain of the wood. MudPaint goes on smoothly and offers excellent coverage, so a little goes a long way. Allow the first coat to dry completely, which typically takes about 2-4 hours depending on humidity and temperature. Once your first coat it dry I like to use a piece of a brown paper bag or really fine grit sandpaper (like a 400-grit) to sand the surface of the first coat. This knocks away any lumps or brush marks in your first coat creating a smooth surface for the second coat to lay on.

PRO TIP: I sand between every coat of paint. Sanding provides that supper soft butter feel to your finished project. So smooth!

4. Apply Additional Coats

For the best coverage and color depth, apply a second coat of MudPaint. Lightly sand the surface with a brown paper bag or 400-grit sandpaper between coats to remove any imperfections and ensure a smooth finish. Wipe away any sanding dust before applying the next coat. Most projects will require two coats of paint. Occasionally you'll need a third coat for those colors that are stubborn to cover.

5. Distress for a Vintage Look (Optional)

If you want to achieve a distressed, vintage look, lightly sand the edges and high points of your furniture with 220-grit sandpaper after the final coat has dried. This will reveal some of the underlying wood or previous paint layers, giving your piece an aged appearance.

6. Seal and Protect

Once your paint is fully dry and you’re satisfied with the finish, it’s time to seal and protect your work. MudPaint offers a variety of sealers and waxes to choose from. Apply a thin, even layer of sealer or wax with a clean, lint-free cloth or brush. Buff off any extra wax within 24 hours. Allow it to cure for the recommended time to ensure a durable finish.

Tips and Techniques

  • Test Your Paint: Before diving into your project, test MudPaint on a small, inconspicuous area to ensure you’re happy with the color and finish.
  • Use Quality Brushes: Invest in good-quality brushes to achieve a smooth, professional-looking finish. My favorites are Zibra brushes, You can find them here
  • Work in a Well-Ventilated Area: Always paint in a well-ventilated space to ensure proper drying and to minimize exposure to any fumes (like your driveway, besides, it'll make the neighbors wonder what your up to.) Also, please note that the MudPaint Clear Wax has a strong odor. Best to do your waxing in a well-ventilated area.
  • Layering Colors: For added depth and character, consider layering different colors of MudPaint. Apply a base coat, let it dry, then add a topcoat in a contrasting color. Lightly sand or wet-distress through the topcoat in select areas to reveal the base color underneath.
